Technology Tuesday: Power of Artificial Intelligence in Microgrids

Some of my favorite movies of all time are stories about how artificial intelligence (AI) goes wrong. Movies such as I Robot, The Matrix, Eagle Eye, and The Terminator, in no particular order, are loads of fun to watch. The central theme in all of them is that technology becomes so advanced that it insists upon thinking for us for the betterment of the world as a whole; the conflict lies in their inadequate and nonhuman moral code. Fun stuff, right?

Energizing the Workforce: Time to ACCELERATE

Through the last year, we have reiterated how vast the opportunity for workforce growth and development is in the energy sector. With the number of jobs at a constant rise, we will need to expand our resources and grow even more in order to support a clean energy economy for our country and the world. The increase in optimism and drive at the beginning of the year began to fade with the outbreak of COVID-19 and all the changes that accompanied it. However, as we continue to work towards a clean energy future, it is imperative that we continuously address our workforce issues and opportunities to result in an even stronger outcome in the end.

A few weeks back, Democratic candidate and Former Vice President Joe Biden, released a “Clean Energy Revolution” Proposal addressing the various topics that we encounter in the energy industry daily.

Energizing the Workforce: Continuing the Journey to Justice

A few weeks ago, I dove into the differences between Equality VS Equity. In short, acknowledging the difference between these two words and grasping what it means to embody each, is imperative for the way we conduct our work in the energy industry. I initially thought it was an ongoing battle between these two. How can we enact equality that then leads to equity?

Technology Tuesday: Task Tuning

This week, we are going to discuss lighting. Now, you might be thinking that since you’ve converted all of your lighting to LEDs you can’t possibly get any more efficient, right?

Not exactly.

Lighting is important because it can represent as much as 30% of the energy usage in a building. Therefore, it is important to understand that lighting efficiency does not just come from the type of lighting product you use but also how that lighting is applied in each space.

Technology Tuesday: Ride Sharing

Energy efficiency doesn’t just start once you arrive at the office in the morning. Energy efficiency can begin with your morning commute which is exactly what some local governments are doing right now!

For example, the state of New Hampshire started a ride sharing program offering special incentive prizes for groups of people that racked up the most avoided miles traveled and the most avoided pounds of emissions. This program was driven by TripSpark, a mobile application that helps individuals find rideshare buddies based upon common destinations and work hours

Energizing the Workforce: A Supportive Return

Myself and the other members of the SJVCEO are thankful that we have been able to continue to work through the COVID-19 pandemic. While working from home or remotely, we have had to make some adjustments, however, we are still able to work through the days safely in our own homes. We are pushing the three-month mark, so yes things have changed, especially in the context of face to face meetings. For our organization, we are unsure of when we will be able to meet in person with partners again, but rest assured, the day will come!

Technology Tuesday: Smart Sockets

What is a smart socket? It’s actually just a fancy way to say smart plug. That may have taken some of the allure out of this topic but I assure you, smart sockets are really super cool!

Your next question is very likely going to be, “what makes them so smart?” Well, they make all of your “dumb” devices into “smart” devices. A smart socket connects to wifi and is usually associated with a mobile app and allows you to control devices remotely. Ever leave your house and wonder if you switched off your curling iron or television? Have you ever left your workstation and wondered if you turned off your monitor or task lamp?
