Technology Tuesday: VTB/V2B/VTG Technology

Good Morning Partners!

Before a few short weeks ago, I had never heard the acronyms VTB, V2B, or VTG.  However, it is a wonderful, common-sense concept and I am excited to share it with you!

Hopefully, we all know the sustainability hierarchy by now: energy efficiency, first; then renewable generation, and finally, battery backup.  But did you know that electric vehicles can play a roll in this sequence?

VTB, V2B, and VTG stand for vehicle-to-building, vehicle-2-building, and vehicle-to-grid technology, respectively.  This means, with certain adaptive technology to the vehicle, an electric vehicle can be used as battery backup.  This is an alternative to making a separate, costly purchase of residential, commercial, or even industrial-grade battery backup systems.  Electric vehicles have become all but ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives, so it makes perfect sense that they should fulfill more than one purpose.

How does this all work?  According to a study performed by Navigant, this concept is being piloted all over the world in different applications.  The technology is not yet widely adopted due to lack of customer understanding as well as the current cost to retrofit plug-in electric.  However, as with all new technology, pricing will decrease as these issues are addressed.

According to Navigant, V2B is being integrated with renewable energy generation, smart buildings, smart EV charging, and in some cases, stationary backup storage.  Look out for this exciting technology at a facility near you!
