Courtney’s Picks:
The heat here has a way of distorting memories. It’s flashes of muddy riverbanks, a hook blade rushing through grape clusters, never feeling truly clean between dust and sweat and chlorine. It’s nights spent drinking in fields and floating in whatever pool you can find. It’s living a nocturnal life in a feeble attempt to exist without the oppressive heat. Even now summer is flashes; moments lived to the fullest in a race to beat a looming expiration date. It’s the last gasp of freedom. It’s always fleeting, yet there’s a comfort knowing it always comes round again. And really, summer at 40 isn’t so different than 14, although my backyard singular grapevine is much quicker to harvest than anything I knew growing up, and I don’t tend to drink in fields anymore either. Although, that’s not to say I wouldn’t (proudly, boldly rural and all…).
Crimson and Clover, Tommy James and The Shondells
Springsteen, Eric Church
What You Want, Mase featuring Total
Spanish Flowers, Sprout House Band
Sam’s Picks:
Hearing the word summer brings visions of vacations at the beach and long days in the pool. In 2020 those ideas may just be a pie in the sky dreams, but I hope my song choices bring those visions to mind even though we may be confined to our homes during this summer.
Slide, Goo Goo Dolls
Summer of ’69, Bryan Adams
Summertime Magic, Childish Gambino
Chillin It, Cole Swindell
Kelsey’s Picks:
While this summer looks different than most, I feel as though this gives us more of an excuse to stream music that reminds us of August, right? Usually, in the summer months, I spend most of my time at countless concerts in locations throughout the state. But alas, I suppose me singing the lyrics of these songs at the top of my lungs in my office at home will have to suffice as a concert for now!
Walking on a Dream, Empire of the Sun
Slide, Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos
Beautiful People, Khalid and Ed Sheeran
Seventeen, Sjowgren
Rochelle’s Picks:
I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I think of Summer, I can’t help but think of the unofficial “anthem” for the summer. What is an unofficial anthem? Well, it’s a song you can’t help but hear pouring out of cars while you’re stopped at an intersection, an anthem often finds it’s way into viral “challenges” on TikTok, or it can be that song that makes everyone jump to the dance floor at a wedding. However, a song may reach “anthem” status, here are some of my most recent and favorite anthems.
Savage Remix, Megan Thee Stallion featuring Beyonce
Don’t Rush, Young T & Bugsey featuring Headie One
Slide, H.E.R. featuring YG
Ye, Burna Boy
