Technology Tuesday: Black History Month
It’s February and you know what that means… BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
Or, as some in our line of work have coined the phrase, Black-Green History Month. This year I would like to honor Carl Anthony.
Carl Anthony is an architect, author, urban/suburban/regional design strategist, and environmental justice activist that has made major strides in aligning the relationship between socioeconomic issues and environmental concerns. While these things often go hand-in-hand, rarely had advocates for each had dialogue about them together and their effects on each other prior to Carl Anthony’s work.
As an organization, SJVCEO strongly advocates for disadvantaged and rural communities. We work hard to ensure that ratepayers in these communities have equal opportunity to benefit from resources that are funded by those dollars.
In this way, our values align with those of Carl Anthony. Carl Anthony co-founded the journal Race, Poverty & the Environment in 1990. This journal, which is still available now, addresses issues often plaguing impoverished communities and communities of color whom are disproportionately vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution and climate change.
Carl Anthony has held many positions of influence with various foundations. He was co-founder of the Breakthrough Communities Project, Acting Director of the Community and Resource Development Unit at the Ford Foundation, he directed the Foundation’s Sustainable Metropolitan Communities Initiative and the Regional Equity Demonstration, he founded the national Conversation on Regional Equity (CORE), and was the founder and, for 12 years, the Executive Director of the Urban Habitat Program in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Carl Anthony’s work has gone a long way to call attention to racial and socioeconomic justice and to start the conversation on how to solve the issues of environmental injustice. We hope his work will continue to positively influence the energy industry and community development.
