Technology Tuesday: Everyday Appliances

Let’s talk about energy saving in everyday appliances.

Your clothes dryer is, not only, a significant energy user in the average home, but it is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.  Energy efficiency standards for clothes dryers have been slow-walked because manufacturers generally offset the higher cost of increasingly more efficient clothes washers with the low cost of clothes dryers because these two items are most commonly purchased together in pairs.  Therefore, the industry has made efforts to keep clothes dryer costs down.

However, heat pump technology is changing this narrative.  Much the same way that heat pumps can be used in HVAC systems to keep your home comfortable and to create hot water for water heaters.  Heat pumps can also be used to produce hot air to dry clothes.

Heat pump dryers are ventless so there are no greenhouse gas emissions and they are up to 50% more efficient than your traditional electric clothes dryer.  While they are currently priced considerably above what you would expect to pay for a traditional clothes dryer, this technology is advancing quickly which means prices will start to decline.  Keep an eye out for this new technology!
