Normalized Metered Energy Consumption (NMEC)
We always enjoy when we can tie one learning bundle to another; it creates bundles of bundles, and heck if that isn’t fun to say! Last month we dove into the rise of smart meters and why the transition to digital data mattered to energy efficiency and end users. This month let’s start unpacking ways to take advantage of these devices.

UCSB Complete Energy Efficiency Projects That Reduce Energy Use
The first of the two UCSB projects began in 2018 as part of the university’s high opportunity projects and programs (HOPP’s) initiative. SoCalGas and Southern California Edison co-funded the project, which investigated how best to update two important laboratories at the university. The utilities verified the energy systems using the NMEC approach, which uses building-level metered energy data to verify savings. Read the full breakdown here!

First Pay-for-Performance Efficiency Retrofit Project in San Francisco Delivers Innovative Upgrades to Historic Downtown Properties Building
“Our new program measures efficiency savings with innovative Normalized Metered Energy Consumption (NMEC) methods, leveraging the advanced technology used by SmartMeters. This first project shows that measuring energy at the meter is the next crucial step towards unlocking deeper energy efficiency.” Click here to learn more!
Southern California Regional Energy Network
Last month, we highlighted SoCalREN’s Metered Savings Program- which uses normalized metered energy consumption (NMEC) to measure energy savings at the meter! Towards the end of 2020, Los Angeles County completed several energy efficiency upgrades to two of their local service centers. These projects were completed to enhance the community with a range of health, educational, social, and recreational activities. Savings generated from these projects will go back into providing services for the community. Click here to learn more about the savings and details!
