January Spotify | Bringing in the ENERGY

Listen up y’all. Life didn’t hit reset at 12:00:01 AM on January 1. We’re still in a global pandemic, there’s still political unrest, the world is still angry, and Disneyland is still closed. But we can have hope.  We bring can bring an energy to our lives that shines so bright it sustains us and brings us though the darkest night. We can do all of that, as Dumbledore says, if we remember to turn on the light—we just ask that it be an LED bulb and when you leave the room you remember to turn it off.

Courtney’s Picks:
Clearly the energy I’m bringing is very British. It’s probably because I spent the better part of early 2020 reading through Harry Potter with my kid, or maybe it was my fall obsession of reworking traditional British comfort food into gluten free/vegan recipes, or maybe it all comes down to my love of The Great British Bakeoff.  Hard to say really. What I do know is the energy of 2020 won’t likely let us go right away, and it will still be a bit before we can return to what we love, or what we didn’t realize we loved (Downey Embassy Suites, I’m looking at you!). I’m cautiously hopeful, guardedly optimistic, and constantly vigilant.

Five Years, David Bowie
London Calling, The Clash
Sigh No More, Mumford & Sons
The Coast of Galicia, Celtic Woman

Sam’s Picks:
You’ll need to consider each of these selections on their own, otherwise it could get confusing! Major Lazer’s ‘Light It Up’ pumps me up with enough energy to finish a long run or a really exhausting home workout. Once I am done getting my heart rate going, I like to sit back relax and reflect, which is where ‘Good News’ from Mac Miller comes in. This song is so soothing and really hits home the idea of just wanting good news and good vibes in your life. My final two songs are just positive energy songs to either start or finish your days. ’Sunday Best’ and ‘Amber’ bring a calmness that always makes me smile. Enjoy!

Light It Up, Major Lazer
Good News, Mac Miller
Sunday Best, Surfaces
Amber, 311

Kelsey’s Picks:
My choices are all over the place which accurately reflects how I am feeling at the start of this year. A new year always comes with these extreme pressures of revitalizing yourself, your schedule, and your daily habits. While it is difficult not to over analyze every facet of your life, it is important to create new goals and bring that ENERGY to a new year. In my opinion, there’s no greater energy than hearing music live at a concert (which I am currently deprived of). I have seen all these songs live at some point in my life and hope that remembered energy brings all the positive energy to 2021!

Vultures (Live at the Nokia Theater), John Mayer
Good Life, Kanye West, T-Pain
Viva La Vida, Coldplay
XO, Beyonce

Rochelle’s Picks:
With January comes New Year’s resolutions and I can’t help but to feel like the new year brings, in some ways, a fresh start.  If nothing else, I try to look at things as positively as possible.  2020 was a crazy year but going into 2021 I am incredibly blessed.  I and those close to me have good health and employment, among other things.  That being said, there’s no reason not to feel empowered to “double up” this year and continue to strive for bigger and better-this is the ENERGY that will set the tone for the rest of the year!

Double Up (feat. Belly & DOM KENNEDY) [Bonus Track], Nipsey Hussle
Smile (feat. H.E.R.), Wizkid
Blessed (feat. Miraa May & Donae'o), Juls
Drip Like ME, Kenndog
