Take COVER, SJVCEO has some new tunes!

Whether using them to protect ourselves or hiding under them, covers are all the rage right now. Team SJVCEO is in both camps, but music is a salve, and thankfully songs we love have second lives in the hands of a different artist.  So, whether you’re listening from deep within your bedsheets or while trying to learn to breathe through a face mask on your daily run, here’s our best-covered tracks to take you through another month.

Courtney’s Picks:
One of the best shows I’ve been to was a yacht rock cover band at Bimbo’s in San Francisco. It was vibrant and full of life and fun! Covers, reworkings, covers of samples—all of this breathes new life into something, and frankly, after seven weeks on the inside that’s what I need right now.
House of the Rising Sun, Heavy Young Heathens (Original-ish by The Animals). *Pay close attention to the drummer, we like him so much we make him our kid’s godfather.
99 Problems, Hugo (Original by Jay-Z)
Doin’ Time, Lana Del Rey (Original by Sublime, although that was heavily sampled from George Gershwin’s “Summertime”).
Lay Lady Lay, Magnet and Gemma Hayes (Original by Bob Dylan)

Samantha’s Picks:
Sure, my picks are all over the board, but truthfully that is a great representation of my music taste. Two of the covers remind me of my younger years belting out Britney Spears and Nelly Furtado. While the other two are a nod to the songs that my parents exposed me to and I learned to enjoy. Hopefully, my picks bring back some memories for you as well.
I’m like a bird, Alessia Cara (Original by Nelly Furtado)
Fast Car, Jonas Blue, Dakota (Original by Tracy Chapman)
Baby One More Time, Ed Sheeran (Original by Britney Spears)
Africa, Weezer (Original by TOTO)

Kelsey’s Picks:
First off, you are welcome for not making every song choice of mine a Glee CLASSIC (I just had to pick one of the originals).  As always, it was a STRUGGLE for me to narrow down the choices to just four, but it had to be done. Hopefully, these tunes brighten your day a little bit more just like RUN DMC’s cover of “Walk This Way” did for me when I was 9… (Thanks dad!)
Say My Name, Hozier (Original by Destiny’s Child)
Somebody to Love, Glee Cast (Original by Queen)
Walk this Way Run DMC (Original by Aerosmith)
Mirrors, Fifth Harmony and Boyce Avenue (Original by Justin Timberlake)

Rochelle’s Picks:
Thinking about having had to take “Cover” from the world in recent weeks, the theme for this month is very appropriate. I took the liberty of listing the original artists for each song as I would venture to guess there are some on the list many people aren’t aware were actually covers.  For example, I Shot the Sheriff is such an identifiably Bob Marley song, I only learned it was an Eric Clapton cover while putting this playlist together. It is always good to learn new things.  Stay safe and healthy and I hope you enjoy.
Ribbon In The Sky, Intro (Original by Stevie Wonder)
Sweet Thing, Mary J Blige (Original by Rufus f/Chaka Khan)
Before I Let Go, Beyoncé  (Original by Maze & Frankie Beverly)
I Shot the Sheriff, Bob Marley and the Wailers (Original by Eric Clapton)
