Technology Tuesdays: Advanced Batteries

Hello Partners!

As we get closer to the Christmas holiday, it seems we are surrounded by examples of just how much technology is advancing.  Each year a whole host of new devices are introduced to the market hoping to capture their share of our holiday spending.  These devices include smartphones, smartwatches, and even devices to make our homes smart.

One glaring shortfall in the continuing advancement of these devices is battery life.  Devices continue to get more advanced, however, batteries have not had any major advancements in decades.  I am confident I am not the only person out there that would like to get more than 1 day’s use per full charge with my smartphone.

In light of this, let’s take a look at two of the many emerging developments in battery technology:
1.  Cobalt-free lithium batteries - One of the major drawbacks of lithium-ion batteries, which are the ones most commonly used in cellular phones and electric vehicles, is their use of cobalt.  Cobalt is a very expensive and finite resource for which researchers have been trying to find an alternative.  The solution?  Nickel.  This material is used to ensure not only dependable battery life but also an even distribution of ions which can increase the efficiency of charging.

2.  Silicon Anode Lithium-ion battery – The replacement of graphite in lithium-ion batteries with silicon would increase the capacity ten-fold!  This has been a challenge for researchers because silicon is an unstable material in batteries.  Recently, they have made significant strides to alleviate this stability issue.

There are dozens of new developments in the works to improve battery life, sustainability, and charging speed, among other issues.  Be on the lookout for some of these improvements to batteries which will, undoubtedly, make our lives easier and more fun by improving the way we are able to use our devices.

Keep an eye out for more ways to save!
