Sustainability in Schools
In 2019, the SJVCEO received grant funding from Energy Upgrade California to conduct various forms of outreach to communities in the San Joaquin Valley. One of these forms of outreach was working with local elementary schools to conduct “Energy Assemblies” that educated young students about to importance of energy usage. With our IOU partners, we were able to engage with hundreds of students and faculty members and increase their knowledge of energy efficiency!

Our partners at The Energy Coalition (TEC) implement a program that is supporting STEM education in schools! PEAK is an environmental STEM education program designed to get students excited about science, engineering, and environmental concepts. PEAK equips educators with resources to help introduce their students to energy topics, everyday eco-conscious actions, and STEM careers! Learn more here!

WHAT OUR PARTNERS ARE DOING

SoCalREN:
With many school facilities closed due to COVID-19 and summer break, now is a great time to consider energy efficiency upgrades that save money and improve learning environments. For example, SoCalREN recently supported Alhambra Unified School District with a retro-commissioning project that will save the district over $73,000 and 750,000 kWh annually.

Join SoCalREN’s upcoming 6/24 webinar with Energy Champions from Alhambra Unified School District and El Monte Union High School District to learn from peers about energy efficiency strategies that meet the moment. Register now!

SCE Announcements:
Ready to make your school more energy and cost efficient? Although energy costs account for only 2% to 4% of school expenditures, they impact about 16% of controllable operational costs. Energy is one of the few expenses that you can reduce without negatively impacting classroom instruction, so be sure to click here and learn more ways schools can save!

SCE has worked with a variety of school districts to make clean energy projects come to life and increase savings! From Temecula Valley School District to University of California, Irvine, make sure to see how SCE’s Energy Management can lead to savings!

PG&E Resources:
Every year, California schools spend $700 million on energy. That is about the same amount they spend on school supplies! PG&E’s rebates, discounts and expert advice can help make it easier for your school to save. Click here to learn how a Central Valley School District took advantage of these resources!

“As parents look for ways to save money on back-to-school shopping, schools are looking to save too – on their energy costs. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is helping hundreds of schools do just that, through energy efficiency rebates. PG&E has provided 385 elementary and secondary school districts in Northern and Central California with more than $39 million in rebates since 2016.” Read the full story here: PG&E Helps Schools Boost Energy Efficiency as Students Head Back to Class

SCG Updates:
SoCal Gas is currently offering standard energy efficiency equipment rebates and incentives! If funding is an issue, schools can take advantage of on-bill financing with loan amounts ranging from $5,000 – $250,000 per meter.

Many schools have pools or aquatic centers so replacing pool heaters as well as installing pool covers can be a good savings opportunity! Schools can also qualify for direct install which will install energy efficiency measures at no cost to the customer. Also, we can’t forget about the kitchen! Many schools have kitchens and SoCal Gas offers great rebates for kitchen equipment. Check them out here!
