Technology Tuesdays: The Progression of Christmas Lights

It is once again my favorite time of the year. In fact, it is everyone at the SJVCEO’s favorite time of the year. By this, I mean, we get started EARLY and the Holiday festivities do not let up until after New Years as you probably already know if you follow us on social media. For some of us, our Christmas trees have been up since November 1st. So, it goes without saying, we take this season very seriously!

That in mind, starting early allows us the space to look around at how other folks approach decorating for the holidays. For example, I have taken to going on short evening walks around my neighborhood. This is only partly for exercise in preparation for all the delicious food that comes along with this time of year. It is mostly to see how everyone has decorated their homes and this year did not disappoint! I have enjoyed seeing the decorations start to roll out house by house and all of the different themes such as Star Wars, Minions, Classic Santa and reindeer, and Nativity.

One thing I can’t help but recognize and call attention to is how far we have come with LED lighting technology, especially with regard to Christmas lights. I can recall the old oversized, colorful, incandescent bulbs people used to adorn their homes with. Now we are in an era where there are not only LED versions of those lights for people with nostalgia but a whole host of new lighting options.

There are 2 brands that have put forth products recently that I think are just so cool!

Twinkly
I first took notice of Twinkly Christmas lights last year. They are an innovative lighting product will all of the bells and whistles. Not only are they gorgeous but they can do many different things. Twinkly lights are fully interactive meaning you can, quite literally, create your own light show from your phone. They can integrate with any one of many smart home hubs such as Google, Alexa, or Apple Home, just to name a few. You can change their color, color pattern, as well as when and how they flash and flicker. Additionally, you can purchase an attachment sound sensor to make them dance to your favorite music.

Twinkly lights are exciting only, they don’t just make Christmas lights. They also offer, 2D and 3D light trees, pre-lit Christmas trees, icicle lights, and string lights

Govee
Another company that produces an exciting Christmas light solution for your home. The caveat here is, when Christmas is over, don’t you wish you could just leave your lights up? As much as we enjoy our Christmas lights, it is a hassle to put them up and take them down each year, not to mention expensive if you pay someone to do it for you. One step further, wouldn’t it be nice if your Christmas lights could serve another purpose other than Christmas lights? All of these concerns can be addressed with Govee permanent outdoor lights. Sounds too good to be true? It’s really not!

These permanent outdoor lights, once installed, can be changed to any color you wish. For example, they can be red, green, white or a combination of those colors for the Christmas Holiday. Then, when Christmas is over, you can readjust the color AND readjust the number of lights activated to create the perfect ambient lighting for outside your home. This is a game changer!

Like the Twinkly lights, Govee is also fully interactive from your phone as well as Google, Alexa, Apple Home and a few other popular smart home hub devices. Govee also makes other lighting products such as curtain lights, strip lights, they even offer a Christmas lights set if you are a one-stop-shop kind of person.

These are just two of many companies making exciting new LED Christmas lighting products that are available in stores right now. It seems that each year a new product pops up and it is a bit more innovative and exciting than the last! It makes me think about how far we’ve come from those bulky incandescent bulbs everyone used to have once upon a time. Now, we have fully interactive lighting that is energy efficient and can be multi purposed.

Although, there are no longer rebates or incentives being offered for most LED lighting and new products are often more expensive just because they are new. I find that am not generally the first in line to purchase the newest items. However, in the spirit of the season, I am excited about these new lighting options, and I am excited to see what comes next for lighting.

The savings never stop!
