SoCalREN Measure Campaign | Part 3 Heat Pump Hot Water Heaters

Through SoCalREN, agencies served by Southern California Edison can upgrade their gas water heaters to electric heat pump water heaters.

Overall, heat pump hot water heaters save energy by leveraging the principle of heat transfer, which is inherently more efficient than generating heat directly. This results in substantial energy savings, lower utility bills, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Traditional water heaters generate heat directly by burning gas or using electric resistance elements. This process is relatively inefficient and requires a significant amount of energy. Heat pump water heaters, on the other hand, use electricity to transfer heat from the surrounding air into the water. They work like a refrigerator in reverse: a refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, compresses it to a higher temperature, and then transfers it to the water. This method uses much less electricity.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The facility's current water heater must exclusively use methane gas (natural gas) as its fuel source.

  • Existing water heaters that hold between 30 - 100 gallons.

  • Facility serviced by SCE.

LIMITED TIME OFFER - COSTS COVERED WHILE SUPPLIES LAST

SoCalREN will cover up to 100% of eligible project costs for heat pump water heater installations at facilities in underserved areas. Up to 50% of eligible project costs will be covered in other areas.*
